Nivatha Balendra is the CEO/Founder of Dispersa, a CleanTech company dedicated to providing natural microbe-derived alternatives to synthetic chemicals on the market.
Nivatha’s environmental research, which she started at the age of 17, focuses on a sustainable microbial solution to remediate oil contamination sites. This fundamental research is now at the heart of her recently formed company. Her work has garnered numerous scientific awards, including the inaugural World Economic Forum Young Scientists Prize which was presented at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in 2014. She was also recognized as Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 by Plan Canada, Pollution Probe Award's Sustainability Leader, and Corporate Knight's 30 Under 30 list for her involvement in environmental sustainability. She was recently selected as one of Top 6 female CleanTech founders for Natural Resources Canada & MaRS Discovery District's Women in CleanTech Challenge.
Nivatha is also a motivational speaker and has spoken at many events, conferences, and classrooms. Being a Stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer survivor, she shares not only her passion for science but also her outlook on living one's life to the fullest.
Having explored the STEM fields since the age of 13, Nivatha recognizes the importance of encouraging the next generation of young scientists by providing opportunities and mentorship. With this in mind, she founded the International Young Scientists Mentorship Program (IYSMP), a registered student-led non-profit organization, in 2015. IYSMP aims to provide enriching STEM opportunities for high school/CEGEP students.
